Dear wife of the late Robert Hayes; loving mother of Larry (Kristi) Hayes of Lapeer; beloved grandmother of Lorae Lynn Hayes and Brian Randall Hayes. Mrs. Hayes was a Chef at Edgewood and Morey s Country Clubs and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Shortly after W.W. II, Irene and her husband Robert Randall Hayes left behind the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, joining many others in a northern migration for the opportunity provided by an expanding American Automobile Industry. They were, as we are now, forever grateful. In the coming years, Irene was a faithful wife, a spotless housekeeper and a proud mother. She typified a generation of at-home moms who later joined the workforce as it became necessary. Such was America then. If you needed help, first you helped yourself. Her simple Christian faith and a love of southern gospel music were her personal trademarks. Her family loved her own soft soprano, and she enjoyed listening to us her son s bluegrass bass and her granddaughters classically trained coloratura. It made her smile that our family singing seemed to get better with each generation. Her last words to us were I love everybody and we all loved her too. She, and her song, will stay in our hearts forever. Private Services were held Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the Riverside Chapel, Simpson-Modetz Funeral Home, Waterford.
