BLITZ KRIEG PUBLISHING Number of Homeschoolers Continues to Rise Despite Economy by Donna Gundle-Krieg March 3, 2009 Note: to comment on this story or other stories about education in Michigan, please go to Examiner.com Homeschooling in America continues to grow and succeed, despite the economy and the criticism of those who don’t understand it.
1.5 million students now homeschool, according to
the Education Report. This is growing at an average rate of 8% per
year.
During tough times, homeschooling families are taking on
night jobs, or putting their teenagers to work tutoring to contribute to
the family budget.
It’s funny that despite the success and growth of
homeschooling, this movement is still continually criticized by those
who are ingrained to believe that government schools are the only
answer.
Deborah Markus, editor of
Secular Homeschooling Magazine, wrote a great piece about this
called
“Bitter Homeschoolers Wish
List.”
Some of the items on her wish list may seem like they
come from an angry person. However, her “bitterness” is legitimate.
Homeschoolers do get weary of constantly being criticized.
“We don't look horrified and start quizzing your kids
when we hear they're in public school,” says Markus.
“Please stop drilling our children like potential oil
fields to see if we're doing what you consider an adequate job of
homeschooling.”
She also asks people to “Please stop asking us if it's
legal. If it is — and it is — it's insulting to imply that we're
criminals. And if we were criminals, would we admit it?
She reminds people that not all homeschoolers are
religious, nor do they homeschool for religious reasons.
“Don't assume that every homeschooler you meet is
homeschooling for the same reasons and in the same way as that one
homeschooler you know.”
