MAKINSON DAVID H MAKINSON PhD DAVID MAKINSON PhD of Akron Ohio, formerly of Bloomfield Hills Michigan, died December 4, 2008. Born in Tiffin OH, May 6, 1930 to Alice (Pittenger) Makinson and Harold Makinson. David graduated from Kent State High School in 1947. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity at Kent State where he received a B.A. in Business Administration in 1951. He later earned a PhD from the University of Iowa in 1962. Dave taught history and social science at the University of Utah, 1962-1964. At Wayne State University, Detroit MI, he was a member of the College of Education faculty, 1964-1993. He especially enjoyed his work with the Horizons Upward Bound program at Cranbrook School, Birmingham MI, and his seminars with graduate students, expanding their appreciation of teaching history. David served his country during the Korean Conflict, serving two years in the U. S. Navy, mostly as Disbursing Officer aboard the hospital ship USS Repose in Inchon, Korea. He worked diligently, even though he was seasick whenever the ship was underway. Always an active churchman, David was a member of Plymouth (Congregational) Church, Birmingham MI, and since moving to Akron in 1994, he was first an elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Akron, and then a member of Bath UCC. He also was active in Rotary both in Michigan and Ohio. David's interests all revolved around his unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He just loved learning about his world. From books to bike rides, stamp collecting to traveling, special cats to the Akron Zoo, he drank in a world of information and helped to bring "facts" alive to so many. Not a musician, he loved classical music. He loved "all foods well prepared." He loved being eccentric just for the fun of it. This ol' world is less interesting without him.
