WENDELL BRUCE ALLEN WENDELL BRUCE WENDELL age 67; of Lapeer; died peacefully
in his home Saturday, December 13, 2008, after a brief, however courageous,
battle with lung cancer. He was born October 4, 1941, in Pontiac, MI, the
only child to Earl Edward and Melba Romaine Wendell. He left home at an
early age, eventually joining the Marine Corps, and spent years traveling in
the states and abroad. He always considered Michigan his home, so in 1970,
after completing two tours of duty in Vietnam, he returned to Pontiac and to
his first wife, Carol, and their three children. Unfortunately, he also
brought with him the horrors of war, and a beast called heroin addiction.
For approximately the next 20 years, Bruce worked for Grand Trunk Railroad,
and other odd jobs as his addiction permitted. He generally loved women, yet
several marriages and relationships also ended due to the chaos of a
drugfueled lifestyle. He "hit bottom" in 1988 when the mother of his
youngest daughter died, leaving him to raise his child alone. Bruce entered
into a chemical dependency treatment program, embraced the fellowship of
Narcotics Anonymous, and never looked back. A high school dropout, he
returned to school, and by 1998 he had earned his Masters Degree in Social
Work from Eastern Michigan University. He began working in Pontiac in a
variety of programs as a chemical dependency therapist, specializing in
treating the hard-core street addict as he had once been. In 2003, Bruce
received awards from the Michigan Department of Community Health Office of
Drug Control Policy and the Oakland County Health Division Office of
Substance Abuse Services for his commitment to alcohol and drug recovery,
and his courage and determination in living a healthy lifestyle, stating he
was "a role model to many and a testament that recovery is possible when one
has the faith and fortitude to make it a reality." Bruce also taught briefly
an Introduction to Chemical Dependency at Oakland County Community College,
but the last several years of his career were spent doing individual and
group work at The Counseling Center in Bloomfield Hills. He felt most able
to help impact a client's successful recovery in this setting, and in his
continued involvement with the self-help fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.
Bruce married his long-time companion Rhonda in 2008, and he began to
rebuild his relationships with his adult children. He said he was living the
life he had always dreamed of and was finally at peace with himself.
Unfortunately, the diagnosis of lung cancer also came in 2008, and from
August to December 2008, he rarely left the hospital due to the severity of
complications he experienced from the chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In
honoring his privacy, Bruce received only family as visitors while he was
confined to the hospital, and in the end he requested a private family
viewing to mourn his passing in his home the day prior to his death.
Cremation has already taken place. Besides many colleagues and long-time
friends from Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous, Bruce leaves behind his
adoring wife, Rhonda; his loving daughters, Marina (Glen) Ford, Tina (Doug)
Bucher and Antonya Wendell; his loving sons, Rio (Kristen) Wendell and Neiko
Wendell; his loving step-children, Angie Acosta, Rashall Hensley and Nicole
(Andrew) Whitmore; several grandchildren; his first wife and long-time
friend, Carol Wendell; and special friends, Matt and Steve, whose support
during Bruce's illness was immeasurable. Bruce was preceded in death by his
parents and within hours by his beloved and eldest grandson, Dane Marsino.
In memory of Bruce's life and commitment to addiction recovery and to help
those addicts who are still suffering, donations may be made in his name to
Solutions to Recovery, 24 W. Tennyson Ave., Pontiac, MI 48340-2668

Condolences at www.LynchFuneralDirectors.com WOLBER FR FERDINAND A WOLBER FR FERDINAND WOLBER age 95, January 4, 2009 of Livonia, Michigan. "You are a Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." Known and loved by all, this great Roman Catholic priest passed into God's time on the Feast of the Epiphany, after having faithfully served in the Vineyard of Our Lord for over 68 years. Fr. Wolber was born in Detroit on November 25, 1913, to Maurice and Marie Wolber. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary in 1928, and was ordained a priest in Detroit's Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on May 18, 1940. He celebrated his first Mass at St. Elizabeth's Church in Detroit on May 19, 1940. Toward the end of World War II Father Wolber was assigned by his Bishop to the Military Chaplaincy. He crisscrossed Japan and the Philippine Islands for several years, serving missionary orphanages, hearing confessions, and celebrating Mass for thousands of American and Japanese Catholics. Called upon to visit the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he later wrote a friend: "I hope I never see such destruction again." After returning to the Detroit Diocese from Japan in 1947, Cardinal Mooney assigned him to the Military National Guard Chaplaincy. In all, he served over 16 years as a Military Chaplain, and retired from the military holding the rank of Major in 1964. Father Wolber served as a priest in several parishes of the Detroit Archdiocese, including Detroit Nativity (1940-1945), St. Monica in Detroit (1947-1952), St. Clement in Centerline (1952-1957), and St. Edward in Detroit (1957-1959). On June 26, 1959, Father Wolber was called upon by Cardinal Dearden to be the founder of St. Genevieve Church and School, in Livonia. He retired as pastor of St. Genevieve in 1984, after diligently serving there for over 25 years. After his "retirement," he tirelessly served the call of more than 20 other area parishes by volunteering to "fill in" for other priests who needed assistance. He often told people that God had been good to him, and that he felt blessed and grateful to be a priest. In 1986, Fr. Wolber was "drafted", by 120 Senior Priests of the Diocese, to represent them as their spokesman in a plea for much-needed priests' retirement benefit increases from the Archdiocese, and in this role he proved to be a very effective advocate for our retired priests. Father Wolber was loved and respected for his great strength of character, and for his unwavering adherence to the teachings of the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church. He was an astute pastor. His administrative skills were incomparable. His kindness and patience as a confessor brought many souls back to the Church. He had an indomitable love for Christ, and a deep devotion to Our Blessed Mother. A truly exemplary priest. Father Wolber was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Marie Johnson, Adelaide Potrikus, and Harold Wolber. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Evelyn Wolber; by 13 nephews and nieces, namely, Marilyn Garwood, Adelaide Humbach, James Johnson, Janice Junglas, Linda O'Leary, Alan Wolber, David Wolber, Jeffrey Wolber, Marlene Wolber, Randall Wolber, Ronald Wolber, Timothy Wolber, Gayle Zahringer; and by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation on Tuesday, January 6 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Manns-Ferguson Funeral Home, 17000 Middlebelt Road (S. of 6 Mile) Livonia.
