Everyone said she looked like Katherine Hepburn only prettier! She had a quick wit and wry charm that captured many admirers throughout her life. She taught her children and grandchildren the value of being individual thinkers—introducing them to her favorite books and films—A Thousand Clowns, Harvey, King of Fools, Catcher in the Rye, Collected Poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay. She was a strong advocate for the environment and nature in general - swans, ducks and wildlife seemed to always congregate around her lake house to her delight. Born on September 26, 1926 in Highland Mills, New York, Kendall was valedictorian of her high school class. She received a B.A. in Sociology from Cornell University in Ithica, New York where she met her husband of 53 years, Thomas M. Hopkins. He retired following a distinguished career as a naval officer and they lived together in McLean, Virginia. His death in 2003 prompted her move to Michigan to be near her daughter Peg Hopkins-Oehler. She is survived by Peg and her two other daughters Karen Crowell and Annette Hopkins; son-in-laws Mark Welles and Ron Oehler; grandchildren Tom Hoppe, Nathan Hoppe, Paul Oehler and Caline Welles; and her dog, Brewster.
