Charles earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Iowa State in 1936. He later served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Mechanical Engineer. He loved playing golf, feather bowling, and especially curling. He was a member of the Detroit Curling Club for over 50 years. He had many friends and experiences from this association. Charles was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1146 located in St. Clair Shores. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Coffing on April 1, 1944 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on March 28, 2002. They had lived in Marion until moving to Sebewaing in 1998. She had been a registered nurse serving in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Marion also was a nurse later in Pontiac and Cadillac. She was a former member of the Marion United Methodist Church where she had been very active. She was an avid reader enjoyed sewing, had been involved in the Girls Scouts, PTA and many church activities. Woody was born March 13, 1919 to Charles Collins and Grace MacTaggart in Farmington, MI. The family then moved to Hadley, MI and in 1926 to the family farm in Bad Axe, MI. Woody was particularly a man of family; a brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His next passion was his true calling as a companion animal veterinarian and to the profession and the colleges teaching that science. Woody served from 1942-1946 as a 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army, in the South Pacific Theatre (and after was a member and supporter of both the American Legion and the VFW). Upon completing military service, Woody attended the then Michigan State College and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1951. He actively practiced for 56 years. In 1962 Woody purchased his first animal hospital, which was followed in 1984 by another, in 1987 by a third, and in 1990 at age 71, he acquired four more clinics, all seven of which continue to operate. Elwood and Linda Rae Nelson were married in May 1959 in Detroit. Their children are Janice Collins, DVM of Plymouth, Leslie Collins of Garden City, Karen Collins Grady, DVM of Cincinnati (Jeff Grady, DVM); son Charles died 2007. In addition Woody is survived by grandchildren, Alexandra, Spencer, Eleanor of Plymouth and Olivia, Bennett, and Avery of Cincinnati, and sisters Lois Harding of Grosse Pointe and Edith Jochen of Maryland. Dr. Collins was an ardent supporter of his alma mater Michigan State University, from which College of Veterinary Medicine both he and daughter Janice graduated. He also supported the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University from which daughter Karen and son-in-law Jeff graduated. Woody was given the signal of honor of receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from MSU in 1981. He was an active member and benefactor of his professional organizations AVMA and MVMA. Woody was known for his love of life-long learning, his eagerness to learn of others, thier ideas and work. He was an avid downhill skier and bird hunter. Most of all Woody will be remembered for his generosity of spirit and mind to family and friends and institutions. She was born to Roy and Margaret Meller Baldwin in Lockney, Texas and grew up in Durango and Denver, Colorado. After graduation from the University of Denver, she earned a master's degree in nuclear physics from Harvard University in 1934. She then married Andrew Dempster and lived in Detroit for 39 years until his death. During the latter part of that period, she taught high school math and science in Detroit Public Schools. She was active in the Unitarian Church in Detroit, the Radcliffe Club, and Girl Scouts. In 1974 she married John Cowen and moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where she was a member of The Village Club. In retirement, they moved to Green Valley, Arizona where she was involved in shuffleboard and P.E.O. Upon John Cowen's death in 2004, she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. A totally selfless, energetic mother, she passed on to her children her love of learning, creativity, outdoor activity, and travel, taking her young family on camping trips throughout the United States. Between and after long periods of tireless care-giving in her home to aged family members, she was able to enjoy extensive world travel with each of her husbands. She is survived by 4 children and 3 step-children: Andrew Dempster (Suzanne), Margaret Edwards (Melvin), Carol Dempster, Jill Licata Russell-Cave (Gordon), Nancy Cowen, Robert Cowen (Karen), and Tim Cowen (Signe).
