SCHLANBUSCH LOWELL D SCHLANBUSCH LOWELL SCHLANBUSCH MINISTER MIXED BUSINESS & PASTORAL CARE There was no separating church life from everyday life as Lowell Dale Schlanbusch saw things….to him every person he came in contact with was a life to be celebrated. Through his generous spirit and sense of humor, he brought joy and comfort to hundreds of Detroiters with whom he worked at General Motors and thru spiritual leadership in the Episcopal Church. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, raised in Columbus, Ohio, Lowell settled in the northern metropolitan Detroit area in the early 1950's. He was hired at General Motors as a mail boy and worked his way up the corporate ladder in the financial staff with a career that spanned 30 years at the auto giant. Lowell is an alumni of Ohio State University, University of Detroit and Detroit College of Law. While working at GM, Lowell attended night classes at the Whittaker School of Theology in Detroit and was ordained to the Priesthood in the early 1970's at St. David's Episcopal Church in Southfield. He was Vicar of St. Alfred's Episcopal Church in Lake Orion and later Rector of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Madison Heights. However, his largest parish he jokingly referred to as " St. General Motors" as he dedicated his life to serving people when ever and where ever he could. Upon retirement from General Motors he obtained his Master in Divinity from St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. Wearing many hats, especially from January thru April, he completed hundreds of individual income taxes, being recognized by the Detroit Free Press in an article entitled, "Holy 1040." Lowell was enormously involved with the Detroit Cursillo Movement serving as Spiritual Director for 32 Cursillo weekends and was a founding member of "The Disciples" a group of Christian men and women dedicated to fellowship and service. He served as Diocesan Chaplain for the Order of The Daughters of the King and was involved in the Prison and Litigurical Clown ministries. Lowell had a passion for working with youth. As a boy he was active in the Boy Scouts of America earning the rank of Eagle Scout. His love of scouting continued, establishing two Boy Scout Troops in the Birmingham area and serving as Scoutmaster for many years. He developed youth programs based upon the Cursillo method for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan which influenced and inspired hundreds of teens from Detroit to Alpena. Lowell passed away on February 8, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 58 years, Sue (Zahn) Schlanbusch, four children: Joan Walsh (Richard), Lewis (Dr. Mary Puls), Sara Mattocks (Norman) and Amy Schlanbusch as well as six grandchildren: Laura and Jeffrey Walsh, Luke and Emily Kujawa, Gus Schlanbusch and Noah Mattocks.
