ADAMS JOSEPHINE M ADAMS JOSEPHINE ADAMS age 85, of Highland; passed away on February 3, 2009, in Bradenton, Florida. Born on May 8, 1923, in Detroit, MI., she lost her parents at an early age and was adopted by Michael and Graciela Civetta. She was a true Matriarch that touched and shaped the lives of many people. Her heart had no boundaries for loving and caring about all her family and friends. She always found ways to make everyone enjoy life. She will be sadly missed. Beloved wife of 51 years to the late Brandon Adams; mother of Michael (Rose) Adams, Nancy (Tom) Oltesvig, Linda (Bill) Slack, Leon (Linda) Adams. She is also survived by her sister Catherine Rossi and her brother Gino D'Ambrosio. AKERLEY JOHN C ACKERLEY JOHN ACKERLEY age 96; went home to Heaven, February 12, 2009; born November 28, 1912 in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada. He moved to Birmingham, Michigan in 1926. At 27 he met and married his first love Lela, and lived the American dream for 61 years. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Birmingham, Michigan for over fifty years. He worked for General Motors Corp. for forty years and was retired for thirty-five years. John spent many hours restoring furniture and caning chairs. He was the loving father to Danial Akerley (Nancy) and Judith Kortryk (Wilbert); grandfather to Christine DeGrendel (Grant), Linda DuCharme (Steven), Karen Todd (Alan), Terrance and Alyssa Akerley; great grandfather of ten who he said made him great. He is survived by his beloved wife, Edna for 8 years in sunny Florida. She is survived by her mother, Jacqueline Doneghy, and her partner, Carol Bennett (Ann Arbor); father, Wendell Allen, and his spouse, Sarah; sister, Adrienne Skinner, and her spouse, Matthew (Aurora, IL); brother, Ian Allen (West Hartford, CT); colleagues and a host of friends. A physician in obstetrics and gynecology, Kristen practiced with North Shore Health Systems, Portage, IN. A graduate of Spelman College, Kristen received her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. She was a member of Beta Kappa Chi and Alpha Lambda Delta. Academic honors include Cum Laude Spelman College, Who s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She was a member of the executive board of the Black Medical Student Association; treasurer of the American Medical Women s Association; as well as performing other professional and civic activities. ALLEN NANCY GREENE BRODHEAD ALLEN NANCY BRODHEAD ALLEN NANCY GREENE ALLEN NANCY ALLEN 84, of Harbor Springs, retired from Northern Michigan Hospital, died Saturday, January 31, 2009. Nancy was born on July 29, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to Guy S. and Helen Arnsman Greene. She grew up in Indian Village in Detroit and Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Nancy graduated from Dana Hall School, Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1943. In 1946 she married Richard Thornton Brodhead, Jr., son of Naval Captain Richard T. Brodhead and Elise Moran Brodhead. While still living in Grosse Pointe, she was a member of Tau Beta Association and the Junior League of Detroit, and she volunteered with the American Red Cross. Richard preceded her in death in 1966. In 1970, Nancy married Paul B. (Jack) Allen, Jr. and together they moved from Grosse Pointe, MI to Harbor Springs, MI. Jack preceded her in death in 2003. Also preceding her in death are her son, Peter S. Brodhead; sister, Sally G. Bragaw; and her brother, Guy S. Greene, Jr. Nancy's interests included golfing, hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, love of dogs, traveling, literature, crossword puzzles, board games and card games and most of all, being with her grandchildren. We will miss her great sense of humor and her vivacious appetite for being the "life of the party". She is survived by her five children: Christine M. Smith of Algonac, MI; Richard T. Brodhead, III (Christine) of Harbor Springs, MI; Brian A. Brodhead (Patricia) of Grosse Pointe, MI; Carey A. Hall of Bay City, MI; Catherine E. Brodhead-Lauer (Bryan) of Harbor Springs, MI. AMIN KAREN ANN AMIN KAREN AMIN The Amin family announces, with a broken heart, the passing away of their beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Karen Ann Amin on February 4, 2009 at her home in Lake City, Michigan. Karen was originally from the Manderfield family of Houghton, Michigan. She had a deep love of the Keweenaw Peninsula, visiting that area often when she came home from overseas. Karen received a nursing diploma from Grace Hospital in Detroit, and bachelor of arts degrees in Middle Eastern studies and Anthropology and a Master's degree in Public Health Administration from the University of Michigan. She is survived by her husband, Sam of 51 years, three sons and their spouses and seven grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, James, of 22 years; a daughter Lindsey (Justin) LeBlanc and one grandson, Cole; and six brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents.
