NELSON ROLAND NELSON DEAN NELSON passed away on March 2, 2009, after a brave but courageous battle with cancer at 81 years old. A celebration of his life will be held at The Heathers Country Club, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 11-4 p.m., March 10th. Dean was born in Detroit, the only son of the late Roland J. and late Marion Nelson (nee Dean). He grew up in Royal Oak, MI, and joined the US Navy towards the end of WW-II. In 1951 he graduated from Michigan State University and in 1953 started his own real estate appraisal company, aptly named Dean Appraisal. In 2000, the company joined the National firm of Integra Realty Resources and is to this day, a stalwart of the business community. Dean never retired and continued to counsel clients and write articles throughout the remaining days of his illness. His latest article, "Enterprise Component Allocation: Methodology Discussion", will be published in April 2009, by the CRE. Member of: the Appraisal Institute; Counselors of Real Estate; Real Estate Answer Forum; Institute of Real Estate Management; National Association of Realtors; the Birmingham Michigan #44 F and AM, Detroit Scottish Rite; and others. Dean taught real estate appraisal classes at several Michigan colleges over the years. Dean authored more than 150 articles published by various professional appraisal institutions, contributing significantly to appraisal theory and techniques including, "Overall Rate-Band of Investment Style"-1969; "Market Testing of Ellwood I & II"-1976-77; "Hotel Enterprise Valuation"- 1988; "Valuation of a Pari-Mutuel Racetrack", among others. Dean is survived by his loving wife Ede who was always ready for the next adventure. The two of them traveled the world for the past 20 years from the South Pole to distant wonders of all Continents and over 60 International airports, with Dean capturing it all on video. Dean was the loving father of Robin Nelson and Nancy (Jon) Simon, and loving step-father of Kathy Handlon, Coleen Handlon-Shaull (Mark), Thomas (Viki) Handlon, Timothy (dear friend Barb) Handlon, and Matthew (dear friend Tracey) Handlon. Dean was a devoted, caring and generous husband to his loving wife, Ede. A good-natured "character" with a unique sense of humour, he was always ready with a play-on-words, and loved to hear and tell jokes and tales of his adventures in and out of the business of real estate. He learned many life lessons "on the stand" and continued to share his love of the business with his friends and colleagues. He loved to travel to northern Michigan for the traditional "hunting season", stopping in to check on the Buckaroo on his way to the Beaver Farm in Baraga. He brought many friends and sons in tow to share those eventful trips. He was a man that will be remembered and missed by many. His stories will resound in the halls of "Dean Appraisal" for many years to come. In lieu of flowers, he asks that you make a sizeable purchase at your favorite watering hole and tell the stories that he no longer can.
