John a 1950 graduate of U. of Michigan and a member of the 1947 National Championship Football team was a career high school teacher and guidance counselor at Pontiac Northern High School. He later achieved a Specialist Degree in Counseling from Michigan State and taught night classes for Oakland Community College. He was also a football and golf coach for Pontiac Central and later for St. Michael's High School. He is well remembered by all for his unfailing cheerfulness and hearty laugh, athleticism and strength, and gentle way with young people. For decades he did his annual "Lion Hunt" story for the young children at both the Frick and Ogg family reunions which were his family by marriage to the former Wanda June Ogg. He was a veteran of W.W. II, Staff Sergeant, Combat Engineers and volunteered for additional duty in Europe after VJ day during which time he played football, hockey, and baseball to entertain the troops during de-mobilization. His Oise All Star football team, on which he was the starting end, once played victoriously against the 1945 Washington Red Skins in a French soccer stadium on the outskirts of Paris. John's legacy of educational and athletic excellence has produced two more generations of scholar athletes among his sons and grandchildren. It was his greatest joy to see his children and grandchildren attended Yale, Amherst, Kalamazoo College, U. of Michigan, Kenyon, Smith, McGill, U. of Connecticut, Wheaton College and watch each one of them play on at least one collegiate varsity football, lacrosse, soccer, or field hockey team. John is survived by his 92 year old sister Mary Addario, Hamden, CT; four nephews, Edward, James, and John Maturo, and Lucian Addario, all of the greater New Haven area; two nieces Maryann Leach of Boston, MA and Cynthia Smith of Manchester, CT; three sons, John 54, New Haven, Raymond 53, and Paul 50 both of Ann Arbor; along with three grandsons Ted, Clark, and Paul Maturo; and 5 granddaughters, Erin, Claire, Amelia, Gianina, and Olivia Maturo. She met Carl Morath while working at the Albert Kahn architectural firm. They were married on June 4, 1945. She began work on her greatest vocation as mother with the birth of their first child the following year. Her home was always a welcoming and nurturing environment for not only her children, but all their friends. On the occasion of her fiftieth wedding anniversary, she received an award from Madonna University acknowledging her many accomplishments as an outstanding and devoted wife and mother.
