MacDONALD GERALD V MacDONALD GERALD MacDONALD 70, of Sarasota, Florida, died April 5, 2009 after a brief struggle with acute Leukemia complicated by 24 years of Multiple Sclerosis. Mr. MacDonald was a graduate of the University of Michigan in 1960 with a B.A. degree in Economics, followed by graduate degrees from Rutgers and Stanford University. He began his career as a teller at Manufacturers National Bank of Detroit and progressed in rank to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He was later responsible for the merger of equals with Comerica Bank in 1991. He consequently served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comerica until he retired in 1993. The MacDonalds resided in the Detroit suburbs and after retirement wintered in Sarasota, FL and spent summers in Holland, Michigan. Mr. MacDonald enjoyed family, golf, music and playing the bag pipes. He was well known for his warm smile and his strong faith in Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife Carol; daughter, Heather (Dr. Tom) Arne of Sarasota, FL, and son, Brian (Stephanie) MacDonald of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and eight grandchildren, Ian, Abbey, Stuart, Luke, Laura, Eric, Logan and Daniel. This summer there will be a memorial service in Holland, MI. MANNING LAWRENCE FREDERICK MANNING JR LAWRENCE MANNING JR LARRY MANNING JR 81 of Detroit, died on April 12, 2009. Beloved husband of Theresa (Mushenski) Manning. Lawrence served in the Navy during WWII at the age of 17. MARK PHILLIP A MARK PHILLIP MARK of Dearborn died April 17, 2009 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was born to James and Emmelie Mark on May 28, 1926 in East Tawas, Michigan. Phil served his country in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Murphy, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. A professional musician and music educator, he taught vocal music in the Dearborn School District for 40 years and served as Choir Director at St. Albert the Great, Sacred Heart and St. Anselm parishes. Phil worked for the Dearborn Recreation Department for many years, directing summer theatre productions and conducting the Community Chorale. He had a wonderful singing voice and was a member of the American Male Chorus and the Dearborn Choral Art Society. He also concertized with the Langsford Singers as member and soloist, both locally and in Europe. Phil enjoyed camping and travel during his summer breaks, creating many wonderful family memories. He really enjoyed golfing with his friends and liked to work on improvement projects for his home and yard. He was a voracious reader and wordsmith, and his quick wit, laugh and mannerisms will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Phil is survived by his children Marcia, Brian (Roseanne) and Christopher, and was a loving Grandpa to Sean, Atlee and Sophia; survived also by his brother Bob (Barbara), siblings-in-law Bill (Berniece), Madelyn, Margaret and Patrick (Rosie), and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Earlene, for whom he cared with steadfast devotion through her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease; also predeceased by brothers Jim and Jack and sister Dora. McCARTHY JAMES DANIEL McCARTHY JR JAMES McCARTHY JR Tax Attorney of Potomac, Maryland, died April 19, 2008, due to complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family, at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Born on June 23, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. McCarthy graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1948 and Wayne State University undergraduate and law programs shortly thereafter. Following law school, he moved to Washington D.C. where he served as a tax agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Later he would move to New York City and worked for the international accounting firm Alexander Grant and Co. A resident of Rockville and Potomac, Maryland since 1967, Mr. McCarthy returned to the Washington, D. C. area to lead the tax consulting division at General Business Services, Inc. once the largest franchise business in the U.S. During his time at GBS, he provided annual tax seminars across the country and developed close personal friendships with many of GBS's over 700 franchisees. After 20 years, he left GBS and started his own practice, Specialized Tax Service where he worked until the day he died. It was noted by his family, that he made it through one more tax season. While providing tax and estate advice was his prime livelihood, one of his greatest joys and proudest accomplishments were the students he taught and mentored for over twenty years at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. His marriage to Judith Lemanske ended in divorce. Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Buckler McCarthy of Potomac, Maryland; one daughter Ellen McCarthy (Hannah) of Alexandria, VA; one son, Timothy McCarthy of Brunswick, MD; son-in-law Gordon Hannah of Alexandria, VA ; three grandchildren, Benton McCarthy, Liam Hannah and Eileen Hannah; two nieces, Beth Ranalli and Audra Kozlowski; four nephews, Peter Hengy, James Hengy, Michael Hengy, Michal Baert. He was predeceased by a sister Ann McCarthy Hengy. Blanche Rees married John A. McClelland Jr. on February 27, 1954. John preceded her in death on June 28, 2003. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Davison and Fenton where she was a member of the St. Jude Guild and the choir. Blanche also volunteered with many charitable organizations and was a Den Mother. Blanche was an RN with St. Joseph Hospital of Pontiac and Crestmont. Blanche is survived by her children, John McClelland III (Danielle) of Davison, Victoria (Tom) Bevel of Alabama, Claudia (Douglas) Hawes of Flint and Craig (Lisa) McClelland of Waterford; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. MURPHY PATRICIA 70, of Oceanside, CA passed away unexpectedly on April 19, 2009. She is survived by her son and best friend, Jeff Clarke, daughters Amanda Siira, (and fiancé Darryl), Cynthia Shivers.
